Samsung has announced the introduction of a new all-in-one power management IC designed specifically for wireless earbuds. The MUA01 and MUB01 PMIC’s are optimised to provide next-generation True Wireless earbuds with more efficient designs to improve battery life.
The new Samsung power management IC’s, MUA01 and MUB01 are designed for both the charging case and the earbuds. They are fully integrated solutions optimised for TWS devices and combine several of Samsung’s current in-house logic technologies. Samsung managed to cram up to ten components, including switching chargers and discharge circuits into a single IC.
With the PMIC taking up less space compared to previous versions, this compact design creates more room for the battery which improves playback time and allows the design of future True Wireless earbuds to be more flexible and efficient. Due to built-in power line communication support, the PMICs can communicate and share information with each other such as battery charge level and whether the earbuds are inserted in the case.
“Samsung’s industry-first, all-in-one power management solutions optimized for TWS devices will allow manufacturers to craft new applications with greater flexibility,” said Dong-ho Shin, senior vice president of System LSI marketing at Samsung Electronics.
In addition to shrinking the size of PMICs with this new design, the MUA01 is also the industry’s first IC to support wireless and wired charging in a single chip. In terms of wireless charging, it supports the latest Wireless Power Consortium’s (WPC) Qi 1.2.4 standard. The MUA01 also includes an effective switching charger for efficient power management, as well as a microcontroller unit and embedded eFlash for modifying the firmware.
