Yesterday, Square Enix held a celebratory livestream for NieR’s 10th anniversary. The livestream brought with it a number of announcements including an enhanced remaster of the original game for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC and a new mobile game set in the same universe. Furthermore, it was announced that 2017’s award-winning NieR: Automata would be coming to Xbox Game Pass on the 2nd of April, with the service set to arrive in the game’s motherland “soon.”
Xbox Game Pass is quickly becoming one of the best deals in gaming. Touted as the Netflix of games, it allows users to download and play a huge slew of both first and third-party titles – AAA and indie alike – all for a single monthly fee. Each month new games are added, with March’s additions including NBA 2K20 and Ori and the Will of the Wisps. We now know that one of April’s additions will be the universally praised ‘NieR: Automata’.
Originally released in 2017 for PlayStation 4 and PC, NieR: Automata quickly became a cult hit, selling far beyond expectations and receiving praise for its gameplay, story and music. Developed by PlatinumGames, the Action-RPG sold over 4.5 million copies and lifted the game‘s Director – Yoko Taro – into the limelight. Over a year later, the game finally released on Xbox One, and served to only push the game to further success.
Though Xbox has failed to get a stronghold on the Japanese market, Microsoft recently announced that it would be bringing its Game Pass service to the country, perhaps in an attempt to try and increase its market share in a country dominated by PlayStation and Nintendo.
NieR: Automata requires no knowledge of previous games in order to understand and appreciate its story. To those of you who own Xbox Game Pass and have yet to try NieR: Automata, there is no better time than when the game launches on the service on the 2nd of April.
