Computex 2024: Asus officially announces the new ROG Ally X

Just as promised, Asus officially unveiled the ROG Ally X this week, coinciding with Computex. Priced at $799, the new version of the ROG Ally packs some minor but notable improvements, including more RAM, expanded storage, a larger battery and design refinements.

One of the highlights of the ROG Ally X is the inclusion of an 80Wh battery, doubling the capacity of its predecessor. However, that's not the only new thing the new Ally has over the non-X model. It also offers a “way more comfortable” gaming experience than its predecessor. The relocation of the D-pad closer to the screen makes it more easily accessible, while adding small M-keys on the rear further improves the user experience.

As for its dimensions, the new model measures 208.2 x 114 x 36.9mm, a slight deviation from its predecessor's 208.25 x 116.5 x 32.4mm. However, the increased battery capacity has resulted in a slightly heavier build, weighing 678 grams. Arguably, the most exciting upgrade in the ROG Ally X is the increased storage and RAM. Boasting a 1TB M.2 2280 SSD and 24GB of LPDDR5-7500, the new model surpasses the previous 512GB M.2 2230 SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5-6400 RAM. Other minor enhancements include better cooling and more durable joysticks.

Despite these enhancements, the ROG Ally X no longer features the ROG XG Mobile Port found in its predecessor, which allowed it to connect to an external graphics card. However, Asus has replaced it with a USB4 port capable of delivering up to 40Gbps of speed. The ROG Ally X is only available in one variant with a Ryzen Z1 Extreme APU under the hood.
