SEGA has “Exciting” plans for Sonic’s 30th anniversary

Sonic the Hedgehog will officially be celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2021. Historically, SEGA has made sure to celebrate such milestone anniversaries in a large number of ways. 2021 is looking to be no different, as the Chief Brand Officer for Sonic the Hedgehog, Ivo Gerscovich, has teased that “We have some exciting news that we can’t wait to share” with regards to the Blue Blur’s 30th anniversary.

In a recent interview conducted by GamingTrend, Gerscovich was asked: “The Sonic franchise is planning on celebrating its 30th anniversary next year; is there anything that fans should expect in the coming months?” to which Gerscovich responded that “Yes! We have some exciting news that we can’t wait to share. But you’ll have to stay tuned for details…”

Earlier in the year, SEGA unveiled its Sonic 2020 initiative, which stated that news on the future of Sonic the Hedgehog would be announced on the 20th of each month for the rest of the year. It is likely that any news on Sonic’s 30th anniversary will come out of one of these monthly announcements.

Sonic’s milestone anniversaries have been hit and miss in the past. For the Hedgehog’s 25th anniversary, the publisher announced two Sonic titles: Sonic Mania, which was universally praised, and Sonic Forces, which saw a much greater amount of scrutiny. For Sonic’s 20th anniversary, SEGA released Sonic Generations, which some consider to be one of the best 3D Sonic titles. Its 15th anniversary meanwhile saw the release of Sonic ‘06, which many consider to be one of the worst.

With the hit of miss nature of Sonic’s previous anniversaries, it'll be interesting to see what SEGA has planned, and whether 2021 will serve as a good or bad year for the iconic video game character. Either way, SEGA themselves appear to be optimistic, with Gerscovich stating that “Sonic’s just getting started…….”
