Nintendo begins filing copyright complaints against fan-made Super Mario 64 PC port

Earlier this month, an independent group shadow-dropped a PC port of Super Mario 64 online, avoiding copyright legal issues by not announcing the project beforehand. Of course, plenty of buzz has spread around about the game since then, so Nintendo's copyright lawyers have caught up on the situation.

The fan-made PC port of Super Mario 64 was created by reverse engineering the game's source code. The people behind it were able to implement DirectX 12 support and support for a wide range of resolutions, including 4K and 21:9. You can also use modern controllers, like the Xbox One gamepad.

Now as reported by TorrentFreak, Nintendo is looking to get the fan project taken down. US-based law firm, Wildwood Law Group LLC, has begun filing copyright complaints, one of which was sent in Google's direction to get the file removed from Google Drive and other services.

“The copyrighted work is Nintendo’s Super Mario 64 video game, including the audio-visual work, software, and fictional character depictions covered by U.S. Copyright”, the notice reportedly reads. “The reported file contains an unauthorised derivative work based on Nintendo’s copyrighted work.”

Several places hosting the game have since taken it down, a sweep of Reddit posts has also seen a number of links removed as Nintendo attempts to crack down.

KitGuru Says: This port might not be widely available, but it will still be floating around in some corners of the internet. So far, a lawsuit against the creator of the project has not been filed, but that could also change.
