Call of Duty: Warzone reaches 60 million players

Though some people may be fatigued by the sheer number of Battle Royale games available today, it would appear as though the genre still has much to offer. Call of Duty: Warzone, which released in early March, has now officially surpassed 60 million players, cementing it as a success for the long running first-person shooter franchise.

Though Call of Duty: Warzone isn't Activision’s first take on the popular genre, it is the first time that the publisher has offered a free-to-play Battle Royale experience for consoles. It would seem that the gamble with going free-to-play has paid off, as the company has now announced that Call of Duty: Warzone has hit 60 million players – less than two months after launch.

Call of Duty: Warzone initially released on the 10th of March, surpassing 15 million players within its first three days. A month after its launch, the game boasted 50 million players. Now, just under a month following that, Warzone has managed to add a further 10 million players, bringing its total player count to 60 million.

For comparison, Apex Legends announced that it had hit 70 million players back in October 2019, roughly 8 months after launch. This means that if Warzone continues with its current trajectory, it'll soon surpass EA’s Battle Royale offering.

That being said, Call of Duty: Warzone still has a long way to go if it wants to compete with the best of the best. Fortnite: Battle Royale, which took the world by storm when it released back in 2017, recently announced that it had reached 350 million registered players.

Call of Duty: Warzone is still in its relative infancy, and with Activision confirming that they plan to support the title in the long run, it’ll be interesting to see how the game continues to evolve and where it’ll be, come the game’s first anniversary.
