Animal Crossing: New Horizons sold 11.77 million copies in its first 12 days

The Nintendo Switch is a successful console, there's no denying this fact. The hybrid console’s success has led to a knock on effect for its first-party games, which have exhibited a high attachment rate. Even so, the overwhelming success of the recently released Animal Crossing: New Horizons is somewhat unprecedented. The company released its fiscal earnings, showing that within the first 12 days of release, Animal Crossing: New Horizons sold almost 12 million copies.

Nintendo recently released its fiscal year earnings report, which provides insight into the company’s operations. The figures end on the 31st of March, and yet despite this, Animal Crossing: New Horizons exhibited huge sales in that time. Between its release on the 20th of March, and these figures – which end on the 31st of the same month – Animal Crossing sold a total of 11.77 million copies.

With 55 million Nintendo Switches sold, this means that within its first 12 days on sale, 1 in every 5 Switch owners purchased the game, with figures likely to have only increased since. This figure puts Animal crossing as the 7th best selling Switch title, only behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (24.77 million); Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (18.84 million); The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (17.41 million); Super Mario Odyssey (17.41 million); Pokémon Sword/Shield (17.37 million); and Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee! (11.97 million).

With such a successful first two weeks on sale, it’ll be interesting to see how many copies Animal Crossing will have sold by the time Nintendo updates its figures next.
