Marvel Rivals will be “much more accessible to new players” than Overwatch

Marvel Rivals is the next big game to take on the Hero Shooter genre, with the free-to-play title set to launch in just over a month’s time. Being a hero shooter, the game has of course been compared to Overwatch. According to the devs however Marvel Rivals is “faster paced and much more accessible to new players.”

In an interview conducted by mp1st, the developers of Marvel Rivals at NetEase were asked for their thoughts on the consistent comparisons to Overwatch. According to the studio:

“We are honored to be compared with some of the best games out there in this genre and we feel we offer an experience that builds on some familiar gameplay elements and creates something unique with the opportunity to play as your favorite Marvel characters.”

The team then went on to describe the ways in which they believe Rivals differs to Blizzard’s offering, adding:

“Marvel Rivals will be faster paced and much more accessible to new players. This game features abilities-heavy gameplay and we put the hero in the hero shooter genre. We want Marvel Rivals to be best in class.”

Of course, while the two games do share many similarities, Rivals being a 3rd-person shooter compared to Overwatch’s first-person perspective is quite a big difference – and so will likely find its own co-existing audience. We will have to wait and see.
