Final Fantasy is one of the most iconic franchises in gaming, with its roots stretching all the way back to 1987. More than 35 years later and the series remains one of Square Enix’s biggest – with the franchise having now sold over 195 million copies.
As shared by industry analyst MauroNL via Twitter, Square Enix recently updated its franchise sales figures, revealing that Final Fantasy is set to soon hit a new major milestone; currently at 195 million copies sold.
This marks a notable increase compared to the same time last year, in which the series was announced to have hit 185 million.
195 million units is absolutely huge, however it is always interesting to note the fact that this means the entire Final Fantasy franchise has ‘only’ sold just about as many copies as Rockstar’s 2013 open-world blockbuster GTA V.
Of course, GTA V is the second best-selling game of all time so the comparison is somewhat unfair. Regardless of GTA’s sales however, the continued success of Final Fantasy so many decades later is welcome to see – even if the series is currently in a bit of a lull.
