The Last of Us Part II has gone gold

The Last of Us Part II, Naughty Dog’s much-anticipated sequel, has had a tumultuous development. Originally set to release on the 21st of February, the game was delayed to the 29th of May citing the need for extra polish. Later however, due to COVID-19 the game was delayed indefinitely. Fortunately, it was later announced that the title would be arriving on the 19th of June. It would seem as though this will indeed be its launch day, as the game has officially been confirmed to have gone gold.

Taking to YouTube to make the announcement, The Last of Us Part II’s Director Neil Druckmann stated that the game had now officially “gone gold”, meaning that the studio has submitted the gold master version of the game to Sony.

Following the submission of the gold master, disks can be pressed with the finalised software, and the storefronts can upload the final version of the game ready for release. It’s a process that every game in development goes through, and means that (aside from post-launch patches) the game is complete and ready to play.

This announcement means that factories and other external factors of production have over a month and a half to ensure that The Last of Us Part II is able to hit its revised release date.

The journey of The Last of Us Part II has been filled with countless delays and massive leaks, but finally it's looking as though fans won’t have to wait too much longer to experience Naughty Dog’s PlayStation 4 swan song.
