iPhone 12 line-up display specs leak

Though Apple have yet to reveal it, it is well known that the smartphone manufacturer’s upcoming iPhones set to release later this year will come in 4 variants. While we know some of the differences that will exist between the models, an industry insider has now provided insight into the varying display tech specs between the upcoming iPhone 12, 12 Max, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max.

According to Ross Young, the founder and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, the iPhone 12 will feature a 5.4” display with a resolution of 2340×1080. This’ll give the device a PPI of 475. Despite likely being the cheapest device in the line-up, the panel for the iPhone 12 will be provided by Samsung Display who have been primarily in charge of providing displays for Apple’s previous OLED iPhones. Lastly, the iPhone 12 display will feature 8-bit colour depth – which is the standard for most phones.

The iPhone 12 Max will reportedly feature a 6.1” display at a resolution of 2532×1170 which makes for a PPI of 460. Unlike the iPhone 12, its Max variant will have its panel sourced from BOE/LG Display. This’ll be the first iPhone to have its display sourced from BOE. According to Young, BOE’s panels may be integrated into more of Apple’s 2021 devices – if all goes well this year. Rounding out the 12 Max’s specs, the device is said to also feature an 8-bit display.

In 2019, Apple introduced a Pro branch to its iPhone line-up. This year will be no different as the manufacturer is said to be making an iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max. The 12 Pro will allegedly feature a 6.1” screen, which is larger than the 11 Pro’s 5.8”. The resolution will be equal to that of the 12 Max, at 2532×1170 for a PPI of 460. That being said, the 12 Pro’s display will be manufactured by Samsung Display, and for the first time, will feature a 10-bit screen. What this means is that the iPhone will be able to accurately reproduce an even wider range of colours than is already possible.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max will be the biggest iPhone ever, at 6.7” with a resolution of 2778×1284. This will give the screen a PPI of 458. Unsurprisingly, the 12 Pro Max will have its display manufactured by Samsung Display and like the 12 Pro, will be 10-bit in nature.

While last year’s line-up saw devices such as the iPhone 11 use LCD displays, it looks as though this year’s iPhones will all feature OLED screens. That means that even though there are differences between these 4 devices, the standard of screen quality overall from Apple’s output will be significantly higher. Of course, we will have to wait until Apple themselves confirm this information, but it is likely that these are the final specs.
