MediaTek announces the Dimensity 820 SoC

The Dimensity 800 SoC was announced in January 2020 and still hasn't found its way into any smartphones that are currently on the market. But things move fast in the world of technology and yesterday MediaTek unveiled Dimensity 800's successor, the Dimensity 820.

On May 18, MediaTek unveiled its latest addition to its selection of mobile SoCs, the Dimensity 820. The new chip replaces the Dimensity 800 and offers support for 120 Hz screens, better Image Signal Processing (ISP) and higher CPU clocks.

The Dimensity 820 is a 5G SoC aimed towards upper mid-range smartphones. The chip from MediaTek is equipped with 4x ARM Cortex-A76 @ 2.6GHz and 4x ARM Cortex-A55 @ 2.0GHz. This means that the CPU in Dimensity 820 is identical to the CPU in Dimensity 800, with the exception that MediaTek has pushed the Arm Cortex-A76 to 2.6GHz, up from 2.0GHz.

MediaTek's new chip supports a camera sensor of up to 80MP, which is a noticeable step up from Dimensity 800's 64 MP limit. The company has chosen to continue to use the ARM Mali G57 GPU, but the Dimensity 820 has five active cores, instead of the Dimensity 800's four active GPU cores. The SoC is produced using a 7 nm manufacturing technology, and the company says that the chip offers a “superb power efficiency”.

Xiaomi has also announced that the Redmi 10X will be one of the first phones to use Dimensity 820 chip under the hood.
