Emmy-winning Director to helm HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’ pilot

Though The Last of Us struggled for years to get a film adaptation off the ground, the recently revealed HBO TV adaptation appears to be going from strength to strength. It has now been confirmed that the pilot episode of the series will be directed by none other than Johan Renck – the Emmy-winning Director responsible for all five Chernobyl episodes.

In a recent interview with ‘DiscussingFilm’, Johan Renck was asked about the fact that “Craig [Mazin’s] next series will be The Last of Us for HBO. Would you want to direct that series and collaborate with him again?” to which Renck revealed that “I’m an executive producer on it and attached to it. It’s an ongoing TV series. So that’s not something that I will be able to take on to that extent, but I’m part of that series and I will be directing at least the pilot. Then we’ll see how it goes on further.”

This is especially notable as Johan Renck was responsible for directing all 5 episodes of Chernobyl, for which he was awarded an Emmy. Chernobyl was also distributed by HBO in 2019, and received over 100 nominations for various awards, including Emmys for “Outstanding Writing” (Craig Mazin) and “Outstanding directing” (Johan Renck).

With Craig Mazin, Johan Renck, HBO, Neil Druckmann and Gustavo Santaolalla all tied to the upcoming adaptation, it is looking as though HBO’s The Last of Us has the potential to be the highest rated video game adaptation of all time.
