Just a few days ago, we learned that Ubisoft was suing Apple, Google and a game developer known as Ejoy over a mobile clone of Rainbow Six Siege. The similarities between Ubisoft's popular shooter and ‘Area F2' were not subtle and now, the mobile game has gone offline.
Ejoy was essentially caught red-handed and likely would have had Area F2 booted off the App Store and Google Play if it didn't take the game down itself. You can see the two games compared in the video below:
Following on from the lawsuit, Ejoy was quick to accept Ubisoft's objections and took the game down. Those who spent money on the game will also be able to get refunds through the Google Play or App Store on Android and iOS.
Ubisoft's lawsuit argued that Area F2 resembled Rainbow Six Siege to the point that it would be easy to mistake one for the other. With that in mind, Ejoy could take the game back to the drawing board and create new art, levels, animations and other assets to avoid the similarities. If done successfully, the game could exist without infringing on copyright.
KitGuru Says: Area F2 looked pretty decent for a mobile game, so I do wonder if Ubisoft will be encouraged to bring Siege to mobile in some form. Other franchises like Call of Duty, PUBG and Fortnite have all successfully made the jump, so it seems like a definite possibility.
