Apple looking to invest over $330 million in a Micro-LED factory

Apple is one of the biggest companies in the world, and is known to invest heavily in new technology. Now it's reported that Apple is considering investing over $330 million in a Micro-LED factory with the goal of bringing the technology to its future devices.

The factory in question is located in northern Taiwan and the investment is expected to be a combined initiative from Apple, Epistar and AU Optronics. Epistar is a Taiwanese LED producer, whereas AU Optronics is a Taiwanese LCD panel maker. According to CENS, it's believed that Apple wants to use Micro-LED technology in a wide range of products – including iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, and Apple Watches.

Micro-LED offers numerous advantages over LED technology and according to some estimates the “Micro LED Display market will reach nearly 3.57 billion US dollars by 2030.” It's reported that Micro-LED is thinner and more energy efficient than LED and OLED. Another major benefit, according to CENS, is that “the power consumption of MicroLED screens is only one-tenth that of LCD displays, and the color saturation is close to OLED.”
