Intel Rocket Lake-S engineering sample spotted on 3DMark, not coming in 2020

Comet Lake-S processors have not even been out for a month yet, but it seems that Intel is already working hard on the upcoming Rocket Lake-S CPUs. An engineering sample of an Intel Rocket Lake-S processor has been spotted in the 3DMark database, featuring 8 cores,16 threads, a base clock of 3.2GHz and a boost clock of 4.3GHz.

If the rumours are accurate, this engineering sample might be the top tier CPU using the Rocket Lake-S platform. It's not clear which process node the CPU is built on from the 3DMark entries, but rumours point to the 14nm process node alongside Intel's first new architecture not based on Skylake. It's also expected that the upcoming Rocket Lake-S CPUs will be compatible with Intel 400-series motherboards and will have PCIe 4.0 support and integrated Xe graphics.

With this new leak, we have 3DMark Fire Strike and Time Spy results for the engineering sample. Starting with Fire Strike, the processor reached a graphics score of 1895, a physics score of 18898, and a combined score of 592. As for Time spy, the CPU achieved a graphics score of 524 and 4963 for its CPU score. These scores are roughly equivalent to an Intel Core-i7 7700K, but of course this is still an engineering sample.

In other news, Rocket Lake-S CPU was initially expected to launch later this year, but it seems that the date has been postponed. A leaked slide from an Asian Intel Partner shared in the ROG forums (via VideoCardz), shows that the 10th Gen Intel processors won't be succeeded by the 11th Gen parts this year. There's still a chance that Rocket Lake-S will fall under the '10th Gen' banner, but only time will tell.

Additionally, the leaked slide also doesn't show any new HEDT platform from Intel in 2020, meaning the 18-core i9-10980XE will remains as the company's flagship part. As with all rumours, this should be taken with a grain of salt.
