Over a third of all video game players want to go professional

Each year, the State of Online Gaming research report looks into the habits and opinions of those who play video games. Recently, the 2020 edition of the report was released. Of particular note was the fact that over one third (38%) of all those who play video games would want to play professionally, if they were able to do so.

The State of Online Gaming 2020 report is based on responses from 4,500 different consumers across France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the U.S, all of whom are 18 years old or more and play video games at least once a week.

Though the report covers a wide breadth of data, some of the most interesting details uncovered is the fact that for 18-25 year olds, watching others “play video games online is more popular than watching sports.”

Despite increasing in popularity by 6 percent over the last year, first-person shooters remain the second most popular form of video game played, only behind “Casual Single-Player games such as Candy Crush, Angry Birds, and Spider Solitaire.”

Overall however, it would seem as though people are spending less time playing video games, with the report claiming that on average, video game players spend six hours and 20 minutes each week playing games – which is reportedly an 11 percent decrease over the previous year.

Though the sample size of the State of Online Gaming report is relatively low, it still provides an interesting insight into some of the changes observed in players’ behavioural patterns each year. The full report can be found HERE.
