A new Gran Turismo for PS5 is all but confirmed thanks to trademark

Recently, we reported on rumours that suggested a new Gran Turismo game was in development for release on the PlayStation 5 in 2020. Now, this rumour appears all but confirmed, as Gran Turismo and Polyphony Digital trademarks were discovered to have been filed in Argentina on the 4th of June – the same date as the PlayStation 5 event’s original time slot.

Discovered by ResetEra user ‘salromano’, the trademarks filed were for the terms “Gran Turismo”, the Gran Turismo logo, and the Polyphony Digital logo. Polyphony Digital are of course the development studio behind the Gran Turismo series.

The date of filing for these trademarks are especially interesting as it lines up with the initial date for the PlayStation 5’s reveal event. Originally planned to go live on the 4th of June, the event was set to give fans “a first look at the games you’ll be playing after PlayStation 5 launches this holiday.”

Lining up the trademark filings with the date of the event would have therefore made sense in order to prevent leaks and spoilers. Of course, Sony opted to delay the event due to the fact that “more important voices [need] to be heard” regarding the Black Lives Matter movement and the murder of George Floyd.

Though there is currently no date for the PS5 event, thanks in part to this trademark there is little doubt that Gran Turismo will be one of the games highlighted at the event. “The games coming to PS5 represent the best in the industry from innovative studios that span the globe,” and a new Gran Turismo title would certainly fit this descriptor.
