Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a smaller, standalone game

One of the big reveals from Sony's PS5 event earlier this week was Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which had a short announcement trailer. Unfortunately, there was quick confusion, as Sony didn't clarify if this was a sequel, a spin-off, or an expansion to the 2018 Spider-Man game.

On Friday, one Sony executive said that Spider-Man: Miles Morales was an “expansion and enhancement” to Spider-Man PS4, leading to concerns that the base game would be packaged and resold for PS5 with additional DLC included. Now, the confusion has been cleared up, with Insomniac Games confirming that it is a standalone game.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a standalone game, but it is not a sequel to Spider-Man (PS4). Instead, as Bloomberg points out, it is closer to what Naughty Dog did with Uncharted: Lost Legacy. Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be a smaller, expansion-sized standalone game, separate to the rest of Spider-Man (PS4).

As for Spider-Man (PS4) coming to PS5, that also seems to be a likely scenario, although Sony still needs to dive a bit deeper into its plans for backwards compatibility or certain first-party game enhancements.

KitGuru Says: Spider-Man: Miles Morales is going to be one of the big draws for prospective PS5 buyers later this year, so setting proper expectations is going to be important. What did you all think of the PS5 reveal this week?
