The PlayStation 5’s UI will be a “100% overhaul”

Recently, we reported that Microsoft’s Xbox Series X would share a very similar user interface to that of the current generation Xbox One. Though we have yet to see what the PlayStation 5’s software looks like it would appear as though Sony is working hard to ensure that the user experience is as fast as possible, and so reportedly the PS5’s UI will be a “100% overhaul of PS4.”

Matt MacLaurin, who is the VP of UX Design at PlayStation, recently revealed a number of details regarding the PlayStation 5’s UI. In response to various questions, MacLaurin commented on the next-gen platform’s software design, calling it “a little more pragmative, but a 100% overhaul of PS4 UI and some very different new concepts.”

MacLaurin offered further thoughts, saying that he’s “excited about what we've got to show there. As it's UI it's practical first, but it's a whole new visual language and a complete rearchitecting of the user interface.”

This “complete rearchitecting” appears to have been somewhat in service of ensuring the experience is as fast as possible, with MacLaurin stating that what’s “most important is experience goals measured in milliseconds across the entire UI,” suggesting that navigating the dashboard will be incredibly smooth.

While the PlayStation 4’s dashboard is easy to understand and navigate, over the years it has certainly become much more sluggish. Hopefully MacLaurin’s claims that Sony are focusing on speed for the PS5’s UI hold true. With hope, we won’t have to wait too long to find out.

KitGuru says: What do you think of the PS4’s home menu? What improvements could Sony make (other than speed)? When do you think PlayStation will reveal it? Let us know down below.
