Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is one of the best selling games on the Nintendo Switch. One of the reasons for this is likely due to the fact that the fighting game features characters from a plethora of franchises, allowing fans to create and play out dream fighting scenarios. Unfortunately, this has led to constant speculation from fans regarding what characters to expect, leading Masahiro Sakurai to silence himself in order to prevent such speculation.
In a recent “impromptu livestream” translated by Twitter user ‘Japanese Nintendo’ Masahiro Sakurai – Super Smash Bros. Director – stated that he has been “playing more games than usual from his house”. However, “he is really nervous (to talk about games)” due to the fact that any time the Director has mentioned a game he is playing, many fans have jumped to the conclusion that associated characters will be making their way to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. According to Sakurai, this rampant speculation has occurred most often from Western fans.
This revelation is especially disheartening due to the fact that the reason Sakurai created Super Smash Bros. in the first place was because of his love for video games. Of course, with characters such as Banjo & Kazooie, Solid Snake, and Joker making their way into the game, it is understandable that fans would get excited any time Sakurai would mention a game ‘he’s playing’.
With that being said, Masahiro Sakurai has previously claimed that despite needing to be hospitalised, he continued to work on Smash Bros. while hooking himself up to an IV drip. With how hard Sakurai works, if anyone deserves to relax and play some video games stress free, he of all people is certainly deserving.
