iPhone 12 reportedly won’t come with a charger

Apple is set to release its latest line-up of iPhones later this year. According to leaks the smartphone manufacturer will once again release a base ‘iPhone 12’ alongside a ‘Pro’ counterpart. Now, according to one insider, the base iPhone 12 will not come with a charger as part of cost-cutting measures.

This information comes via Ming-Chi Kuo, a well known and trusted analyst within the Apple community. According to Kuo (and as reported by 9to5mac), the base iPhone 12 will not come with a charging brick in order to “keep selling the iPhone 12 at a similar price to the iPhone 11”. The iPhone 12 is said to be including 5G capabilities, which adds significant cost, and so some cost-cutting was allegedly required.

Other claimed benefits include reducing plastic waste, while also reducing the size of the iPhone packaging, “helping lower Apple’s freight costs and be[ing] better for the environment.”

The iPhone 11 launched at a retail price of $699. Recent leaks and rumours have suggested that Apple is targeting a starting price of $649 for the iPhone 12 – which would offer significant savings for potential buyers upon its release.

That being said, customers who don't already own a charging brick will then have to pay extra – bringing costs back up. Furthermore, it is currently unknown whether Apple plans to include a lighting cable in the box, or whether that would be a separate purchase too.

Bringing costs down and transferring these savings to customers is a good thing, but removing the charging brick and cable – in some people’s eyes – could be seen as a step too far.
