Custom and private game servers aren’t nearly as common nowadays, particularly in games published by larger publishers. Support for modding and community tools is starting to grow once again though, with the most recent example being Sea of Thieves.
Custom servers have been something that Rare has been mulling over for some time now. To get the ball rolling, those who have signed up for the Sea of Thieves Insider Program will be invited to test these tools out in the weeks and months to come. Then later this year, we should see a wider public rollout.
We don’t know specific details on what features these servers will include, but they will likely be used for private tournaments to start off with. Perhaps at some point players may also get the ability to locally host for their friends but there is no news on that at this point.
Similarly to the Battlefield games, it is likely that there will be a private server rental system in place at launch.
KitGuru Says: We’ll have to wait and see how this turns out, but I’ll personally be hoping for hosting tools for friend groups that want to play both PvE and PvP in a closed server. Have many of you been playing Sea of Thieves recently? Are private servers something that you would be interested in?
