A Super Bomberman Battle Royale is coming exclusively to Stadia

Google recently held its latest Stadia Connect stream, outlining the next 6 months or so of games and updates coming to the service. While many of the games announced are already available elsewhere, the search giant did unveil a few Stadia exclusives including a 64-player Battle Royale featuring the classic Konami character Bomberman.

Super Bomberman R Online is an expanded and enhanced version of Super Bomberman R, which was released for the Nintendo Switch back in 2017. The main addition coming to Super Bomberman R Online is a “unique Battle Royale experience for up to 64 players to compete in live battles, in addition to other game modes.”

Other enhancements coming to the Stadia version include “greater customization options including numerous characters (including those from Super Bomberman R and other Konami IPs), costumes, accessories and for the first time, bomb skins—affecting both the bomb and the blast itself”. The game will also include Stadia’s Crowd Play functionality, allowing streamers to connect and play with their audience.

Since the rise in popularity of Battle Royales, developers have been finding new and creative ways to evolve older formulas into this relatively new genre. It’ll be interesting to see just how well Super Bomberman R is adapted to work when expanded to a 64-player Battle Royale. Super Bomberman R Online will release first on Stadia sometime later this Autumn.
