Gabe Newell would buy an Xbox Series X over a PS5

As we recently learned, Valve co-founder, Gabe Newell, is currently hunkered down in New Zealand while the COVID-19 situation gets sorted out in the United States. He has already appeared on New Zealand TV once to thank the country for its hospitality by announcing a free concert. Now, Newell has been back on TV and this time, he was asked to weigh-in on the Xbox Series X VS PS5 discussion.

When asked which upcoming next-gen console he thinks is better, Newell explained that he would go with the Xbox Series X. He doesn't dive into too many details, but this is likely down to the difference in raw power. While the PS5 may have a very speedy SSD, the Xbox Series X has the stronger GPU and CPU combination.

Newell has been critical of both Microsoft and Sony in the past and traditionally, he is against ‘walled garden' platforms. Back in the days of the PS3, Valve had issues bringing Portal to the console due to its unique Cell processor. Meanwhile, Newell also spoke out against Microsoft in the Windows 8 days and began a big push for gaming on Linux in fear that Microsoft was going to try to lock down PC gaming.

Of course, Newell has no horse in either race as Valve is traditionally a PC gaming company. Occasionally, it does sell games on consoles but it is far from the norm.

KitGuru Says: When it comes down to it, console preferences don't really matter in the grand scheme of things, but it is always interesting to hear a figure like Newell speak out on upcoming hardware.
