Analysts detail growth in PC market during Q2 2020

While there have been plenty of reports of doom and gloom in the PC market over the years, time and again, these have been countered with reports of growth. This time around, two analytic firms have observed growth in the PC market, with shipments rising by more than 10 percent during the second quarter of 2020. 

Two new reports have been published, showing the growth of the PC market in Q2 2020, one from IDC and one from Gartner. Both reports show a steady uptick in PC shipments in Q2 2020 compared to the year before – Gartner reported a growth of 2.8% whilst IDC said 11.2%. According to IDC's study Apple showed the biggest increase YoY. However, it's worth mentioning that Apple's reported 36.0% increase YoY only translated to a 1.4% bigger market share.

“The second quarter of 2020 represented a short-term recovery for the worldwide PC market, led by exceptionally strong growth in EMEA,” said Mikako Kitagawa, research director at Gartner. “After the PC supply chain was severely disrupted in early 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some of the growth this quarter was due to distributors and retail channels restocking their supplies back to near-normal levels.”

It is believed that some of this growth can be attributed to conditions during the pandemic, leading to more people working on PCs from their homes and stores needing to restock.
