We've recently heard a lot about Nvidia's interest in acquiring ARM, but it was only a matter of time before other suitors began popping up. This week, reports indicate that TSMC and Foxconn are also interested in buying the British chip developer.
A couple of weeks ago we reported that Nvidia was showing interest in acquiring ARM and last week there were signs that Nvidia had started taking action and that the company was having ‘advanced talks’ to acquire ARM. Now, as reported by Nikkei, TSMC and Foxconn are throwing their hats in the ring as well.
It's easy to understand why companies are showing a keen interest in the future of ARM since it's providing the “blueprints used in more than 90% of the world's mobile chips”. Apple, Qualcomm, Samsung, Huawei and more or less every chip maker would be affected in one way or another by ARM changing ownership.
At the moment, Nvidia still appears to be the front runner, but TSMC and Foxconn can certainly make decent bids of their own should talks progress that far.
KitGuru Says: The race to acquire ARM appears to be heating up. We can expect more updates in the next few weeks as negotiations continue.
