Samsung details the 980 Pro NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD

Samsung is about to launch the successor to the 970 Pro. Available in 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB  storage capacities, the Samsung 980 Pro will use PCIe Gen4 x4 and NVMe 1.3c interfaces to offer transfer speeds that double what we can expect from PCIe Gen3 SSDs, while also being backwards-compatible with PCIe 3.0 interfaces.

Samsung accidentally went live early with a listing and full specifications for the 980 Pro NVMe SSD last night. The proper page (link) has since been taken down at the time of publishing. However, the folks at Guru3D got a good look at the contents beforehand, bringing a full breakdown of features and specifications.

With sequential read speeds of up to 7000MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 5000MB/s, the Samsung 980 Pro can reach up to 1M random read/write IOPS (4K, QD32). The standard M.2 2280 form factor allows you to easily mount the SSD in desktops and laptops, offering a versatile storage solution for different workloads.

Ideally used in “heavy-duty applications”, the Samsung 980 Pro uses a unique cooling system to ensure stable performance for long periods. The SSD's controller is nickel coated to offer superior heat transfer, and the NAND chip has a dedicated heat spreader to reduce its temperatures. Additionally, this SSD features “Samsung's Dynamic Thermal Guard technology” to automatically control its temperature, increasing the durability and performance during its lifespan.

With a rated MTBF of 1.5M hours, the Samsung 980 Pro supports AES 256-bit encryption, Garbage collection, TRIM and S.M.A.R.T. You can also use Samsung Magician software to monitor the SSD's health, protect your data, optimise the SDD's performance, and ensure that you receive all the latest firmware updates for your drive.

Pricing and availability have not been shared yet, but we should get those details once Samsung is ready to unveil this SSD properly. One thing we do already know is that the Samsung 980 Pro SSD will be backed by a 5-year warranty or 600TBW warranty
