When Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was announced during Sony’s PlayStation 5 event, the next generation title was not given a release date, nor a release year. While many took to assume that this meant the game was still a ways off, a recent comment from an Insomniac Games representative revealed that that game would be arriving during the PlayStation 5 console’s “launch window.”
This information comes via Geoff Keighley’s Opening Night Live, where an extended demo of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was shown off, giving fans a better look at the next-generation title’s gameplay, interactivity, and quick loading speeds via the rift mechanic.
Following the conclusion of the demo, the event’s host Geoff Keighley was joined by Marcus Smith, who is the Creative Director at Insomniac Games, as well as Mike Daly – the Game Director at the studio. The two discussed the various aspects to Rift Apart, including the fact that the game canonically is an extension of Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus – though the game can be understood and enjoyed entirely on its own merits too.
What was most interesting perhaps is the fact that following the question from Keighley regarding the game’s release date, Mike Daly revealed that the game is “coming out in the PS5’s launch window”. While ‘launch window’ can be stretched relatively thin, the fact that the game is even releasing any time near the launch of the console is undeniably surprising. This is due to the fact that Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which is launching during Holiday 2020 (presumably day-and-date with the console) is also developed by Insomniac Games.
Whether it launches early during the window, or during the final days of the ‘launch window’, it is exciting nonetheless to see that Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will be arriving much sooner than likely anyone expected.
