Tekken 7 sells 6 million copies as franchise supasses 50 million

The Tekken series has long stood as one of the core video game fighting franchises since its inception in 1994. Despite being over 25 years old, it appears as though the series’ popularity has not yet waned, as the latest entry – Tekken 7 – has now officially surpassed 6 million copies sold, bringing the entire franchise’s sales figures to over 50 million.

Announced during Tokyo Game Show, Katsuhiro Harada, the Game Director for Tekken revealed that “TEKKEN7 had achieved Over 6 million sales!” adding that “We recorded Over 50 million copies sales for the series.”

Tekken 7 launched on consoles in 2017. Within two months the game had already sold 2 million copies. This sales success continued, with the most recent figures prior putting sales at 5 million copies back in December 2019.

The game’s continued success is no doubt pushed by the developer’s own support for Tekken 7. To date, the game has received 3 seasons of content, with the 4th season recently being shown off at TGS.

What will be interesting to see is whether Tekken 7 manages to outsell Tekken 3, which currently holds the record for the best selling game in the franchise. With 8.5 million copies sold, Tekken 3 is not only the best selling Tekken game, but the 3rd best selling fighting game of all time. Tekken 5 is right underneath it, with 8.2 million copies sold, with the two best-selling being Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (20 million), followed by Super Smash Bros. Brawl (13.32 million).
