Sony's PS5 showcase last night started off with a bang, with Square Enix announcing Final Fantasy 16. The next mainline game in the long-running JRPG series is coming to PlayStation 5 and PC – there is no release date news just yet, but we do have a lengthy trailer to look at.
Final Fantasy XVI (16) is being developed by Square Enix Creative Business Unit III, in other words, it falls under the leadership of Naoki Yoshida, who has become well-known amongst Final Fantasy fans for his excellent work on bringing back Final Fantasy 14.
Combat seems to be taking inspiration from Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy XV, so expect action systems rather than turn-based strategy.
You can get a rough idea for the overarching story taking place here, which in true Final Fantasy fashion, has something to do with magical crystals. There is no release date, but many are guessing 2022 at this point. While the game has been announced for PS5 and PC, it is also likely that the PS5 version releases first, with the PC version coming a bit later.
