Sony reveals list of PS4 games that won’t run on PS5

There has been some confusion over the PlayStation 5's backwards compatibility with PS4 games. Sony previously announced that it had tested the top 100 PS4 games and expected the majority of the PS4 library to work on the new console. Now, we have more specifics, with Sony revealing a small list of PS4 titles that won't run on PS5.

In an updated support page published this afternoon, Sony confirms that “the overwhelming majority of the 4000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles”. A select number of PS4 games will run at higher or smoother frame rates through the PS5's Game Boost mode, but a list of specific supported titles is not available just yet.

Sony also warns that “although many PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles, some functionalities that were available on the PS4 console may not be available on PS5”. There is also a warning that some PS4 games “may exhibit errors or unexpected behaviour” when played on PS5.

So what PS4 games won't be playable on PS5 when the console launches? The list is fortunately very small:

  • DWVR
  • Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume One
  • TT Isle of Man – Ride on the Edge 2
  • Just Deal With It!
  • Shadow Complex Remastered
  • Robinson: The Journey
  • We Sing
  • Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
  • Shadwen
  • Joe's Diner

We don't know exactly why these games won't run on PlayStation 5, but in some instances, licensing issues likely play a role.

KitGuru Says: Backwards compatibility on PS5 will indeed be extensive for PS4 games, with just ten titles ruled out. Now hopefully Sony can also provide a list of games that will work with the PS5's boost mode.
