Nintendo Switch sales surpass NES

The Nintendo Switch has performed excellently since its launch over three years ago. At this point, the console has surpassed the lifetime sales of the Wii U, GameCube, Nintendo 64 and SNES. This week, the console also surpassed the NES in lifetime sales.

As part of Nintendo's recent earnings report, the company revealed that 68.30 million Nintendo Switch consoles have been sold as of September 2020. This puts the console ahead of the NES, which sold over 61 million units in its lifetime. Soon, the Nintendo Switch will be looking to surpass the 3DS, which sold over 75 million units during its lifetime.

As you would expect, Nintendo Switch sales are bolstered by a well-performing software line-up. Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold over 26 million copies, making it the second best selling Switch game to date.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars has sold 5.21 million copies and Paper Mario: The Origami King has sold 2.82 million copies so far. In all, Nintendo has made $2.79 billion in operating profit in the first six months of the year. The company expects to sell another a total of 24 million Nintendo Switch consoles before the end of the fiscal year, which ends in March 2021.

KitGuru Says: The Nintendo Switch is continuing to do extremely well and could end up being Nintendo's most successful console ever. How many of you already own a Nintendo Switch or are looking to pick one up?
