Rumours surrounding a remake of the classic JRPG Final Fantasy IX have been percolating for a while now, despite no official word on the project from publisher Square Enix. That said, thanks to a new report from one insider, a ton of details have been shared.
According to known leaker Midori, the development of Final Fantasy IX Remake was initially outsourced to a studio external of Square Enix themselves, however it has since been taken back in-house.
Despite the development shift, the game is said to be very far along, suggesting an announcement could be sooner rather than later.
The remake will remain faithful to the original in that it will utilise turn-based combat, though it is unclear whether the ATB system will also return or not.
Finally, Midori confirmed that in alignment with the publisher’s recently revealed plans, FFIX will be a multiplatform release, with no exclusivity windows in sight.
With the remake said to be less ambitious than the current FFVII Remake trilogy, hopefully we will hear from the project soon.
