Back in August, ArenaNet announced that it would be bringing Guild Wars 2 to Steam ahead of the game's next major expansion. This Steam launch was originally planned to take place this month, but plans have since been pushed back.
The Steam release was set to precede the game's next major expansion, End of Dragons, which is due to release next year. However, ArenaNet has since decided to dedicate all of its resources on developing the expansion, putting a pause on the publisher's plans for Steam.
Here is what the studio had to say: “We’ve made the decision to put the Guild Wars 2 Steam release on hold for the time being. Our number one priority right now is crafting Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons with the high quality you expect and deserve. Additionally, we’re full speed ahead on delivering an epic climax to The Icebrood Saga that lives up to (and we hope exceeds) previous Living World finales.”
There is no new Steam release date for Guild Wars 2 at this time. From the sounds of it, we could be waiting until 2021.
KitGuru Says: I wouldn't have thought that a Steam release would cost that many resources, but either way, prioritising new content seems like a smart move. We'll be getting more Guild Wars 2 news later this week too, as we'll be seeing the first trailer for ‘The Icebrood Saga: Champions'.
