Newly announced ‘The Callisto Protocol’ is set 300 years after PUBG

At the 2020 Game Awards, one of the more interesting game announcements was that of The Callisto Protocol. Though not much is known about it, aside from it being a survival horror game from the creator of Dead Space, it has since been revealed that the game is actually set 300 years after the events of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.

Glen Schofield, the CEO of Striking Distance Studios and director of The Callisto Protocol, spoke to IGN following the announcement of the game at The Game Awards. Speaking on the game, Schofield said “I’m looking forward to really trying to make the scariest game on next-gen platforms. From what I hear — it’s hard to be the creative and talk nicely about it — but from what I hear… [Dead Space] was one of the scarier games of [its generation] and I want to do the same on next-gen.”

Striking Distance Studios was created under PUBG Corp with the intention of creating a “narrative experience” within the world of the popular Battle Royale game, PUBG. As can be seen from the trailer though, The Callisto Protocol appears to share very little with PUBG, both thematically, and story-wise.

Being set 300 years in the future however, it will be interesting to see what the studio has planned for this universe, and whether it will be revealed how exactly the world went from fighting other players across Erangel, Miramar, Sanhok and Vikendi, to fighting for your life against aliens on the moon of Jupiter. We’ll have to wait until 2022 to find out.
