As we know, the PlayStation 5 is well and truly sold out – even if a significant number of units ended up in the hands of scalpers. Sony has since confirmed that the PS5 was the company's biggest console launch ever, even beating out the PS4, indicating “unprecedented demand” for the new console.
Today, Sony confirmed that the PS5 was the company's biggest console launch ever. The PlayStation team also acknowledged the “unprecedented demand” it continues to face for its new hardware:
We want to thank gamers everywhere for making the PS5 launch our biggest console launch ever. Demand for PS5 is unprecedented, so we wanted to confirm that more PS5 inventory will be coming to retailers before the end of the year – please stay in touch with your local retailers.

Aside from celebrating the successful launch, Sony also promises fans that “more PS5 inventory will be coming to retailers before the end of the year”. With that in mind, there will be a couple more opportunities to get a next-gen console before the end of 2020.
At this point, both Microsoft and Sony have seen great numbers for their respective next-gen console launches. However, stock shortages are likely going to continue. Microsoft's estimations indicate that demand will outstrip supply for the next few months at least.
