Sony is removing movie and TV purchases from PlayStation Store

Back in January 2020, Sony decided to shut down PlayStation Vue, its own live TV subscription service. Now, the next phase of re-focusing PSN on games is coming, with Sony announcing that it will no longer support movie or TV rentals or purchases.

In a short blog post today announcing ‘upcoming changes' to on-demand purchases, Sony Interactive Entertainment revealed that it will be shutting down movie and TV purchases/rentals on the 31st of August.

“We’ve seen tremendous growth from PlayStation fans using subscription-based and ad-based entertainment streaming services on our consoles”, Sony says. “With this shift in customer behaviour, we have decided to no longer offer movie and TV purchases and rentals through PlayStation Store as of August 31, 2021.”

Those who do purchase or rent movies and TV shows on PSN will still be able to access their paid-for content after this date. However, no new purchases will be possible across PS4, PS5 and mobile.
