Though sentiment surrounding the game has ebbed and flowed over the years, there’s no denying that Overwatch has had a notable impact on the industry, for better and for worse. That said, with the 11th Season of Overwatch 2 on its way, the team have revealed that the franchise has hit a new player milestone.
As part of the trailer for Overwatch 2’s 11th Season – which is set to drop on the 20th of June – the team at Blizzard snuck in the fact that the franchise has now surpassed 100 million players.
Released back in 2016, Overwatch 1 managed to amass over 60 million players during its lifetime. Of course, while the first entry in the series was a paid product (unlike the free-to-play sequel) Overwatch 1’s figures likely includes those who signed up for the game during free weekends and such.
It is therefore unknown exactly what this 100 million figure means, and whether there is some overlap with players from both games.
Regardless, 100 million players across two games is certainly a massive achievement, especially as Overwatch is not available on mobile – unlike many of its contemporaries.
