The new Resident Evil reboot film gets a release date

While film adaptations of video game franchises have typically underwhelmed both critically and commercially, the Resident Evil series of films managed to be a major success in at least one of these fronts. As such, following the conclusion of the Milla Jovovich-starring series, it was announced that there would be a new rebooted Resident Evil film franchise. Despite the global pandemic and many cinema chains being closed, this new film has received a release date of September 2021.

This new Resident Evil film, which is being distributed by Sony Pictures, has now received a theatrical release date of the 3rd of September 2021. Though little is currently known about the film itself, it was revealed that this first entry in the rebooted series would “divulge the secrets of the Spencer Mansion and Raccoon City, while serving as an origin story for the first and second games.”

While the previous Resident Evil film series strayed quite far from the source material, this new rebooted series will reportedly be much more faithful to the games, and according to the director, Johannes Roberts, is going to be “super, super scary.”

As mentioned, the decision to release the film in 2021, when most of the world  is still suffering from the effects of COVID-19 – leading to many countries engaging in full-scale lockdowns – is an interesting one. It is likely that Sony Pictures is betting on the situation being under much greater control by its intended release date of the 3rd of September. We’ll have to wait and see.
