Skyward Sword HD announced for the Switch

2021 is the 35th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda series, and typically Nintendo likes to celebrate these milestone years with new games and more. While last night’s Nintendo direct didn’t include a blowout celebration as some may have hoped, it did bring some Zelda news nonetheless. Nintendo has announced that The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will be coming to the Switch this Summer.

At yesterday’s Nintendo Direct, The Legend of Zelda series’ Producer Eiji Aonuma took to the screen to give fans a slight update on the much anticipated Breath of the Wild sequel. While no new footage was shown, Aonuma did tell fans that development was going smoothly and to expect more news later this year.

In the meantime, fans can look forward to Skyward Sword HD, which will be coming to the Nintendo Switch on the 16th of July. Skyward Sword was the most recent mainline 3D Zelda game prior to Breath of Wild. Released on the Wii in 2011, Skyward Sword utilised the Wiimote’s motion plus accessory for much more accurate motion controls.

When playing on Switch, players will have the option to either use the Joycon’s built in gyroscope to mimic the motion controls from the Wii, or they can use the right analogue stick to swing the sword, allowing the game to be played without motion controls for the first time ever.

While every other 3D Zelda game has received an enhanced port in some way or another, Skyward Sword was the only game remaining to not have received such a treatment. As such, it is nice to see Skyward Sword making its way to Switch. Hopefully ports of other Zelda titles aren’t too far behind.
