Gameplay for Rare’s unreleased ‘Dinosaur Planet’ shown off

Ever since its founding in 1985, Rare has been the brains behind a number of classic video game titles and franchises, its most lucrative period of which was most likely during the Nintendo 64 era. One of the games which never made its way to the console however was Dinosaur Planet. Now thanks to an unreleased build, fans have been able to take a look at the game.

As announced by game preservationists ‘Forest of Illusion’ a December 2000 build of Rare’s unreleased ‘Dinosaur Planet’ has now been released. This build was reportedly obtained by purchasing the disc from a private game collector in Sweden for an unknown sum.

Following this, gameplay of the title has been shown off, 20 minutes of which can be found HERE thanks to Digital Foundry’s John Linneman who managed to get the game running on a Nintendo 64.

Dinosaur Planet was a 3D adventure game which was originally intended to release on the Nintendo 64. Eventually however, the game was restructured and released as Star Fox Adventures on the GameCube in 2002. It is interesting to see just how different the build is from the final game, and what could have been, had the game not been altered to tie into the Star Fox franchise (a decision which was reportedly suggested by Shigeru Miyamoto).
