Mortal Kombat movie trailer released

The past few years have seen a major increase in both the number and quality of video game-related films. From movies such as Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog, and many more upcoming titles, it would seem as though the age of film adaptations for video games is back once again. One of these adaptations is Mortal Kombat, the first trailer for which has now been released.

The Mortal Kombat series is no stranger to film releases, seeing two live action adaptations back in the 90s. This new film however serves as a reboot for the film series. Though a third Mortal Kombat film was always planned, the commercial failure of Mortal Kombat Annihilation caused the 3rd film to fall into a longstanding pit of development hell. Over 20 years later however, Mortal Kombat is back in live-action film form.

The plot for the film is as follows: “MMA fighter Cole Young (Lewis Tan) is unaware of his heritage – or why Outworld’s Emperor seeks to hunt him down. Cole finds sanctuary under Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano) and prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high-stakes battle for the universe. Will Cole be able to unleash his arcana in time to stop the Outworld once and for all?”

Mortal Kombat will be coming to theatres on the 16th of April, or alternatively will be available to stream through HBO Max in regions where the service is available. Currently in the UK, all cinemas are closed due to the nationwide lockdown imposed as a consequence of COVID-19. It will be interesting to see how Mortal Kombat performs in the wake of this, and whether it will also hold up critically.
