Marvel’s Avengers Xbox Series X/S and PS5 enhancements coming in March

While Square Enix originally planned to release The Avengers for next-gen consoles closer to launch, the Xbox Series X/S and PS5 versions had to be pushed back to 2021 for extra polish. Now, we have an official launch date, with the newly enhanced versions of the game coming on the 18th of March.

Last night during the developer's War Table stream, the team announced that the game will be enhanced for Xbox Series consoles and PS5 with “up to 4K resolution”, higher frame rates and improved textures, models and physics effects. These enhancements will be free to those upgrading from an Xbox One or PS4 version of the game.

The stream wasn't solely focused on next-gen console versions though. The main event was the introduction of Hawkeye, a free new playable hero with new story content.

The Hawkeye DLC follows on from the addition of Kate Bishop late last year and continues the same story line, introducing a new supervillain known as Maestro. The introduction of Hawkeye brings us to the end of currently announced DLC hero characters – with the exception of Spider-Man, which is unfortunately a PlayStation exclusive DLC – there is no word on when this DLC will release for PlayStation owners, but given the state of the game and need to bring new players in, it has likely been delayed to a bit later in the year.

While on the surface a relatively simple change, I argue that Treyarch intimately studied DOOM and the past 30 years of first-person shooter evolution to craft one of the most satisfying gameplay systems yet.
