Xbox may be working on a VR headset

While companies such as Valve, PlayStation and even Nintendo have tried their hands at virtual reality, Microsoft has stayed far away from the technology, especially with regards to Xbox. That being said, the console manufacturer may in fact be working on a headset, based on a reference made in the Series X|S’ operating system.

As discovered by IGN Italy, when attempting to pair the newly released Xbox wireless headset to the Series X|S a message popped up saying “The VR headset needs to be updated”. Once again, in the next step, a message popped up saying “An update for the VR headset is available.”

While the wireless headset is clearly not a VR device, this does allude to the fact that Microsoft may in fact be working on such a peripheral. In the past, Xbox’s head Phil Spencer said that the console manufacturer was not currently interested in the VR market, but that this could change in the future.

Since then, the technology has evolved substantially with devices such as the Oculus Quest 2 performing very well. Furthermore, Sony recently announced that they are working on a successor to the PS VR, indicating that the company has long-term plans for the technology.

While VR still remains a niche market, it is entirely possible that the peripheral may one day be the primary method of playing video games. If that ever becomes the case, then Microsoft would be behind the curve, and would have to play catch up. It would therefore make sense that the console manufacturer has plans for a VR headset – even if they are simply working on it internally.
