NieR: Automata has sold 5.5 million copies

NieR: Automata became a cult hit when the open-world action RPG launched in early 2017. Over time, the game saw continued success, far outselling the expectations of publisher Square Enix. With Nier: Replicant ver.1.22474487139… just around the corner, Nier: Automata celebrated its 4th anniversary with the announcement that 5.5 million copies have been sold.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official NieR account said “It's a double celebration. Since launching in Japan four years ago today, #NieR:Automata has surpassed 5.5 million shipments and digital sales worldwide, and we'd like to thank every single moose-riding, mackerel-eating, machine-hacking, pod-fishing one of you – thank you!”

NieR: Automata has seen a steady and continuous increase in sales figures ever since its launch in February 2017. The game sold 1.5 million copies by May of 2017, increasing to 4 million copies by May 2019. The most recent figures, which were reported in December, had Automata’s sales figures at 5 million copies, meaning that the game sold a further 500,000 copies in just the past few months.

With NieR: Replicant ver.1.22474487139… set to release in April, the announcement that Automata has sold 5.5 million copies could not have come at a better time. It will be interesting to see how many copies Replicant sells, and how long fans will have to wait for a proper sequel to Automata.
