Basketball is coming to Nintendo Switch Sports in a surprise update

Nintendo Switch Sports was far from the game many Nintendo fans were hoping for when the title released back in 2022, with the premium game in many ways being inferior to Nintendo’s own Wii Sports pack-in title from back in the day. That said, Switch Sports did improve over time thanks to a number of free updates. Over a year on from its last major patch, the game is getting a surprise new sport.

Announced during the most recent Nintendo Direct, the console manufacturer revealed that Basketball will soon be added to Switch Sports via a free update. Said to be available ‘Later this Summer’ the update will mark the 8th sport being included – a welcome surprise indeed.

When it does become available, the Basketball game will feature multiple modes. The primary game mode allows for 2v2 matches using motion controls both in local and online play. A couple bonus party-styled modes will also be available – but only locally – these being ‘Solo Three-Point Challenge’ and ‘Five-Streak Battle’.

As mentioned, it’s been well over a year since the last major update to the game, and even longer since a new sport was added, and so this upcoming update comes as a pleasant surprise.

While many would likely still consider the OG Wii Sports to be the more fun experience between the two, it is nice to see Nintendo rounding out Switch Sports with a couple new additions – making it feel much more like a complete package.
