Elgato Light Strip Review – £60 for this?!

Rating: 6.5.

Elgato is known for releasing excellent gear aimed at live streamers and content creators. Now they’ve gone one step further, or even maybe one step too far? That's because the company is now offering their own RGB LED light strips, coming in at a seriously high asking price of £60 for a single, non-diffused, 2m LED strip. Today we’re going to put Elgato’s premium strip against two ‘Amazon Choice' RGB LED strips that are much cheaper alternatives to see if the Light Strip really is worth such a high price tag.

Specifications:

  • Included: 2m Light Strip, controller, power supply, Tesa adhesive strip, quick start guide
  • Brightness: 2000 lumens, adjustable
  • Colour range: 3500 – 6500 Kelvin, adjustable
  • Power: up to 30W
  • Wi-Fi connection: 2.4 GHz, 802.11 b/g/n
  • Supported encryption: WPA2 + AES, WPA + TKIP/AES
  • Strip dimensions: 2000 x 12 x 3 mm
  • Controller dimensions: 88 x 39 x 19 mm
  • Wi-Fi enabled Mac/PC or iOS/Android device required
  • Elgato Stream Deck support
  • Elgato Control Centre app required to adjust effects etc.

Pros:

  • Excellent brightness and colour representation.
  • Build quality feels premium.
  • Control Centre app on both Android and PC is very intuitive.
  • Stream Deck support means these are ideal for live streamers/content creators.

Cons:

  • Took an excessive amount of attempts to connect to the Control Centre app.
  • Incredibly expensive.
  • Only 2m, no extensions available currently.
  • For more than 2m you must buy multiple 2m strips with multiple power supplies to power each 2m strip (you’ll need lots of power outlets).
  • Wi-Fi 2.4GHz only, there is no Bluetooth support or physical controller.

KitGuru says: Despite the product itself being of good quality with great brightness and colour representation, we feel that the Light Strip was rushed. With some thought Elgato could have turned this product into something special, with a choice of whether to use wall power or USB power, even if it limited some features or brightness, this would have given extra utility. Launching the Light Strip with the ability to extend them, maybe offering a starter pack with a 3m Light Strip and a 2m extension for around £50 would have been acceptable – but as it currently stands at £60 for a single 2m strip that requires a plug socket for each one purchased… We have to be honest and advise you to consider other options unless you absolutely need Stream Deck integration.
