Niantic is teaming up with Nintendo once again for AR Pikmin game

Pokémon GO took the world by storm when it first launched back in 2016. Since then, the game has continued to consistently bring in a great deal of revenue every year. Developed by Niantic, Nintendo is once again partnering with the studio to bring another of Nintendo’s properties to life: Pikmin.

In a press release, Nintendo and Niantic announced that the two companies “are partnering together to jointly develop apps that combine Niantic's real-world AR technology with Nintendo’s beloved characters.”

The first title announced as part of this renewed partnership will be “based on the Pikmin franchise, with gameplay activities designed to encourage walking and make the activity more enjoyable.”

Commenting on this new title, Nintendo veteran Shigeru Miyamoto said “Niantic’s AR technology has made it possible for us to experience the world as if Pikmin are secretly living all around us. Based on the theme of making walking fun, our mission is to provide people a new experience that’s different from traditional games. We hope that the Pikmin and this app will become a partner in your life.”

Little else is known about this game, though with a confirmed release year of 2021, expect more news from this sooner rather than later. Pokémon is a massive franchise and so the success of Pokémon GO was not surprising. It will be interesting to see whether Pikmin will be able to emulate its predecessor’s success.
