Fortnite on Switch gets boosted resolution

It’s not often that video games get improved graphics on the exact same hardware. Typically that privilege is reserved for enhanced consoles or newer generations of systems. However, the developers at Epic Games have seemingly managed to squeeze more out of the modest Nintendo Switch hardware, improving the resolution of Fortnite on the hybrid handheld.

Making the announcement on its blog, Epic Games revealed that “we’re releasing an update to enhance our player experience for the Nintendo Switch. Specifically, we’re upgrading the renderer on the Nintendo Switch to make better use of the console’s GPU.”

What this means for Switch players is that whether you play in docked or handheld mode, you will see an improvement to resolution. In handheld mode, the resolution has been bumped from 1000×560 to 1170×660 – a 36% increase in resolution. Docked mode sees less of an improvement, but an improvement nonetheless, going from 1390×780 to 1560×880.

This improvement will reportedly not affect performance in any negative way, and while a dynamic resolution is still in place, it will seemingly “occur less frequently”. Last but not least, Fortnite on Switch will see a slight reduction in filesize, saving users 140MB.

As can be seen from the comparison photo, the change in resolution is not insignificant to say the least. While still only 30fps, Switch users should have a more enjoyable time playing Fortnite on the go.
